It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he went to Muzdalifah along with all the people. There, Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) performed two prayers together (Maghrib and ‘Isha). He only offered the obligatory (fard) prayers of each, with adhan and iqamah, and ate food between the two prayers. After that, when dawn began, he immediately performed the Fajr prayer. At that time, it was so dark that some people said Fajr had begun and others said it had not yet begun. After completing the prayer, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “These two prayers, at this place, i.e., Muzdalifah, have been delayed from their (original) times—Maghrib and ‘Isha. So people should not come to Muzdalifah until the time of ‘Isha, and the Fajr prayer should be performed early in the morning at its (proper) time.” Then Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed until the whiteness (of morning) spread widely. After that, he said: If the Commander of the Faithful, ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), were to proceed now towards Mina, he would be acting in accordance with the Sunnah. (When the Commander of the Faithful, may Allah be pleased with him, departed, the narrator ‘Abdur Rahman says:) I do not know whether the statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came first or the departure of the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came first. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) continued reciting the Talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrat al-‘Aqabah on the day of sacrifice. (At that time, he stopped the Talbiyah.)
