Narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the ruling regarding a lost (unclaimed) item. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Recognize its binding," or he said, "its container and its pouch (recognize them), then announce it for a year (i.e., search for its real owner). After that (if no owner is found), benefit from it, and if its owner comes (even after a year), then hand it over to him." Then that man asked, "What about a lost camel (if found, what should be done)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became angry until both his blessed cheeks turned red, or (the narrator said) his blessed face turned red, and he said: "What have you to do with that camel? Its water bag and its shoes are with it, it will reach water (and drink), and eat (leaves) from the trees, so leave it until its owner finds it." Then that man asked, "What about a lost goat (is it permissible to take it)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "(Take it, because) it is for you, or for your brother, or (if it does not come into anyone's hands) then for the wolf."
