`Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)` (during his caliphate) used to prohibit performing Tamattu‘ and Qiran (combining Hajj and ‘Umrah). So when Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this, he put on the Ihram for both Hajj and ‘Umrah together and said: ((Labbayka bi ‘umratin wa hajjatin)) (that is, he performed Qiran), and said that I cannot abandon the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) because of anyone’s statement.
