Hadith 682

Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were at Baqi' graveyard with a funeral when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to us and sat down, and we sat around him. He had a stick in his hand, and he began to strike it on the ground. Then he said: "For every one of you, or (he said) for every living being, his place in Paradise or Hell has been written, and it has also been written whether he is sinful or righteous." So a man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Should we not rely on this and stop doing deeds? Because the one whose name is written among the righteous will surely turn towards good deeds, and the one whose name is written among the sinful will go towards evil." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Yes! Those whose names are among the righteous will be granted the ability to do good deeds, and those who are sinful will be granted the ability to do evil." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this verse: "As for he who gives (in charity) and fears Allah and believes in the best (reward), We will ease him toward ease (i.e., Paradise)." (Surah Al-Lail 5, 7)
