Hadith 645

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that when Abdullah bin Ubayy (the hypocrite) died, his son came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Please give me your shirt and pray his funeral prayer and seek forgiveness for him." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him his shirt and said, "(When the funeral is ready) inform me so that I may pray for him." Accordingly, he informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to pray for him, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) held him from behind and said, "Has Allah not forbidden you to pray for the hypocrites?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have been given a choice in this matter. Allah has said: 'Whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them (it is all the same for them); even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will never forgive them.'" (Surah At-Tawbah: 80) So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed his funeral prayer, then this verse was revealed: "And never pray (the funeral prayer) for any of them (the hypocrites) who dies." (Surah At-Tawbah: 84)
