Hadith 561

´Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that` we were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a solar eclipse occurred, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up and, in haste, dragged his cloak and went to the mosque. We also entered with him. Then he led us in two rak‘ahs of prayer until the sun became bright again. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone’s death. When you see this condition, then pray and supplicate until that state passes.” In another narration, it is said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “But through them Allah frightens His servants.” The hadith of the eclipse has been narrated several times. In a similar hadith, Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), once a solar eclipse occurred on the day when Sayyiduna Ibrahim (the son of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away. So people said that the solar eclipse occurred because of the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone’s death nor because of anyone’s life. Therefore, when you see (the eclipse), then pray and supplicate to Allah.”
