Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to go to the Eid prayer place on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. The first thing with which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would begin was the prayer. After completing the prayer, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stand facing the people while they remained seated in their rows, and he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would advise them and give them commands. Afterwards, if he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wished to dispatch an army, he would prepare it, or if he wanted to command something else, he would give the order, then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would return.
Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The people continued upon this practice until I went out with Marwan for Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr, and he was the governor of Madinah at that time. When we reached the Eid prayer place, a pulpit was placed there, which Kathir bin Salt had prepared. Suddenly, as Marwan intended to ascend it before the prayer, I grabbed his garment. He freed himself from me and ascended. He delivered the sermon before the prayer, so I said to him: By Allah! You have changed (the Sunnah of the Prophet). He replied: O Abu Sa'id! What you know has now passed. I said: By Allah! What I know is better than what I do not know. Then he said: People would not remain seated for us after the prayer, so I delivered the sermon before the prayer.
