Hadith 530

Narrated by Sayyiduna Bara’ bin ‘Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered a sermon before us on the day of Eid al-Adha after the prayer. He said: “Whoever offers the prayer as we do and sacrifices as we do, then he has indeed followed our way. And whoever sacrifices before the prayer, then (the sacrifice) he made before the prayer is invalid, and it is not a sacrifice.”

Then Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him), the maternal uncle of Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him), said: O Messenger of Allah! I sacrificed my goat before the prayer, and I thought that today is a day of eating and drinking, and I wanted my goat to be the first to be slaughtered in my house, so I slaughtered my goat and ate some breakfast before coming for the prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Your goat is a goat for meat (not for sacrifice).”

So he said: O Messenger of Allah! We have a kid (young goat) which is dearer to me than two goats. Will it suffice for me? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Yes, and it will not suffice for anyone after you.”
