Hadith 519

`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that` (on one occasion) during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), people were afflicted with drought. On a Friday, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, a Bedouin stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Wealth has been destroyed and children are hungry, so pray (to Allah) for rain for us." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands, and at that time we did not see even a patch of cloud in the sky. But by the One in Whose hand is my soul, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet lowered his hands when clouds gathered like mountains. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not descend from his pulpit until I saw rain dripping from his blessed beard. Then it rained upon us that day, and the next day, and the third day, and the fourth day, and so on until the next Friday. Then that same Bedouin (or Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said) or another man stood up during the Friday (sermon) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! (Due to the abundance of rain) houses have collapsed and wealth has been submerged, so pray to Allah for us." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and said: "O Allah! Let the rain fall around us and not upon us." Then whichever direction the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to a cloud, it would move away, and the whole of Madinah became clear like a basin, and the stream of the valley of Qanat flowed for a month, and whoever came from any direction would describe the state of the rain.
