Hadith 5

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the explanation of Allah Almighty’s words: “Do not move...” etc. (Surah Al-Qiyamah: 16) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to face great difficulty at the time of the (Qur’an’s) revelation, and among those difficulties was that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would move his lips (quickly) (so that he might memorize the revelation). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said (to the narrator Sa‘id): I move my lips before you just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to move his lips. (In short, seeing this state of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,) Allah Almighty revealed these verses: “O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), do not move your tongue with it (the Qur’an) to hasten to acquire it. Surely, upon Us is its collection and its recitation.” (Surah Al-Qiyamah: 16-17) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says (i.e.) its collection (preservation) in your chest and its recitation to you. Then, “When We have recited it, then follow its recitation.” (Surah Al-Qiyamah: 18) Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says (i.e.) listen to it attentively and remain silent. Then, surely, its explanation is upon Us. (Surah Al-Qiyamah: 19) (i.e.) then surely it is upon Us that you remember it. After that, when Jibreel (peace be upon him) would come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the divine words, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would listen attentively. When Jibreel (peace be upon him) would leave, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite it just as Jibreel (peace be upon him) had recited it before him.
