Hadith 49

Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both):
When the people of ‘Abdul Qais (the tribe of ‘Abdul Qais) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he said to them: “Which people are you, or (he asked) which delegation are you?” They replied, “(We are) from the family of Rabi‘ah.” He said, “Welcome to the people or the delegation! You will neither be disgraced nor regretful.” Then they said, “O Messenger of Allah! We cannot come to you except in the sacred months, for between us and you is the tribe of Mudar (who are disbelievers), and we fear them. So, please tell us something clear (a summary of rulings) that we may inform those we left behind, and by which we may enter Paradise.” They also asked him about drinks (which are lawful and which are unlawful). So, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things.
(1) He commanded them to believe in Allah alone, and said: “Do you know what it means to believe in Allah alone?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “It is to testify that there is no god (worthy of worship) except Allah, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah; to establish prayer; to give zakat; to fast in Ramadan; and to give one-fifth of the war booty (to the treasury).”
And he forbade them from four things (i.e., from drinking from four types of vessels):
(1) From green glazed jars,
(2) From gourds,
(3) From hollowed-out wooden vessels,
(4) From oil jars.
And sometimes (Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, would say) “muqayyar” instead of “muzaffat.”
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Remember these things and convey them to those you left behind.”
