Hadith 479

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that some poor people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "The wealthy have obtained high ranks and everlasting bliss. They pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast (in other words, they participate in the acts of worship that we do), and they have more wealth, with which they perform Hajj, ‘Umrah, strive in jihad, and give charity." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you something, that if you act upon it, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you, and no one after you will overtake you, and you will be the best among those with whom you are, except for one who does the same as you? So after every prayer, recite Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times." The narrator says that after this, we differed among ourselves, and some of us said that we should recite Tasbih thirty-three times, Tahmid thirty-three times, and Takbir thirty-four times. So I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) again, and he said: "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar — all should be recited thirty-three times each."
