Hadith 463

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): Once, people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the moon on the night of the full moon when there are no clouds over it?" The people replied, "O Messenger of Allah! No." He said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds over it?" They replied, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "So you will see your Lord in the same way. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be resurrected, then Allah, the Exalted, will say: 'Whoever used to worship something (in the world), let him follow it.' So some of them will follow the sun, some will follow the moon, and some will follow idols, and this group (of believers) will remain, and among them will also be the hypocrites of this Ummah. Then Allah, the Exalted, will come to them in a form which they do not recognize and will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, (We do not recognize You), we will remain here until our Lord comes to us, and when He comes, we will recognize Him. Then Allah, the Exalted, will come to them in a form which they recognize and will say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'Yes, You are our Lord.' Then Allah will call them, and a bridge will be placed over the back of Hell. All the Prophets will cross it with their nations, and I will be the first among them to cross. On that Day, no one will speak except the Prophets, and the words of the Prophets on that Day will be: 'O Allah, grant safety, grant safety.' In Hell, there will be hooks like the thorns of Sa'dan. Have you seen the thorns of Sa'dan?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "They will be like the thorns of Sa'dan, except that no one knows their greatness except Allah. Those hooks will snatch people according to their deeds. Some will be destroyed (falling into Hell) due to their deeds, and some will be torn to pieces (by the wounds), then will be saved. Until, when Allah wills to show mercy to those among the people of Hell, He will command the angels to bring out those who used to worship Allah. So the angels will bring them out, and the angels will recognize them by the marks of prostration, and Allah has forbidden the Fire to consume the marks of prostration. So the Fire will consume the whole body of the son of Adam except the marks of prostration. They will be brought out from the Fire (in such a state that) they will be blackened, then the water of life will be poured over them, and (by its effect) they will grow as a seed grows in the flow of a stream. After that, Allah will finish judging between the servants, and one man will remain between Paradise and Hell, and he will be the last of the people of Hell to enter Paradise. His face will be towards Hell, and he will say, 'O my Lord! Turn my face away from Hell, for its air has poisoned me and its blaze has burnt me.' Allah will say, 'Well, if I do this favor for you, will you ask for anything else?' He will say, 'By Your Majesty, I will not ask for anything else.' Then Allah, the Exalted, will take from him as strong a promise as He wills, and Allah will turn his face away from Hell. When he turns towards Paradise and sees its freshness, he will remain silent as long as Allah wills, then he will say, 'O my Lord! Place me at the gate of Paradise.' Allah will say, 'Did you not make a promise that you would not ask for anything else besides what has already been given to you?' He will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most miserable of Your creation.' Allah will say, 'If I grant you this, will you ask for anything else?' He will say, 'By Your Majesty, no, I will not ask for anything else.' Then Allah will take from him as strong a promise as He wills. So Allah will place him at the gate of Paradise. When he reaches the gate of Paradise and sees its freshness and joy, he will remain silent as long as Allah wills, then he will say, 'O my Lord! Admit me into Paradise.' Then Allah, the Exalted, will say, 'O son of Adam! How treacherous you are! Did you not make a promise that you would not ask for anything else besides what has already been given to you?' He will say, 'O my Lord! Do not make me the most miserable of Your creation.' Then Allah will laugh and be pleased with him. After that, He will permit him to enter Paradise and will say, 'Wish (i.e., ask for whatever you want).' So he will begin to wish until his wishes are exhausted. Then Allah, the Great and Glorious, will say, 'Ask for more.' Now Allah will remind him until, when all his wishes are finished, Allah will say, 'You are given all this (according to your wishes) and as much again.' (Upon hearing this hadith) Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said at this point: 'Allah, the Exalted, said: You are given all this and ten times as much.' So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, 'I remember from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only this statement in the hadith: You are given all this and as much again.' So Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'I myself heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: You are given all this and ten times as much.'"
