Hadith 399

Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with the illness in which he passed away, and the time for prayer came and the call to prayer was given, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Tell Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer.” It was submitted to him (Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, herself submitted) that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is a soft-hearted man, so when he stands in your place, (due to the intensity of grief) he will not be able to lead the prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said again, but the same was submitted again. The third time, the Prophet (peace be upon him) again gave the command and said: “You are like the women who were companions of Yusuf (peace be upon him). Tell Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer.” So (it was conveyed and) Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to lead the prayer. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt some relief in himself, so he came out supported by two men, as if I (even now) am looking at the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) feet, that due to the weakness of illness, they were dragging on the ground. So, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to step back, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured to him to remain in his place. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) was brought until he sat beside Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) would pray, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would follow the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) prayer, and the people would follow Abu Bakr’s (may Allah be pleased with him) prayer. In one narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat on the left side of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stood and led the prayer.
