Hadith 26

Narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave (wealth) to some people while Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting there. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left out a person (i.e., did not give him) who seemed to me the best among them, so I said, “O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason that you ignored such-and-such person? By Allah, I consider him a believer.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “(You consider him) a believer or a Muslim?” I remained silent for a while, then what I knew about that person compelled me, so I repeated my statement, that is, I said, “What is the reason that you ignored such-and-such person? By Allah, I consider him a believer.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “(You consider him) a believer or a Muslim?” Then I remained silent for a while. After that, what I knew about that person compelled me, so I repeated my statement again, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also gave the same reply again. Finally, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “O Sa’d! Sometimes I give to a person out of fear that (if he is not given, he might become a disbeliever and) Allah may throw him headlong into the Fire, even though another person is dearer to me than him. (I do not give to the latter because I do not have such a concern about him).”
