Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fought in the battle of Khaybar, and we offered the morning prayer near Khaybar in the darkness. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted (his ride), and Sayyiduna Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) also mounted, and I was riding behind Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded through the streets of Khaybar, and my knee kept touching the thigh of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he removed his lower garment from his thigh until I began to see the whiteness of the thigh of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he entered the valley and said: “Allah is the Greatest! Khaybar is ruined! Whenever we descend upon the courtyard of a people (for battle), then evil is the morning for those who have been warned.” He said this three times. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The people (of Khaybar) came out for their work and said, “Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has come, and the army (has also come).” So we conquered Khaybar by force of the sword. Then the captives were gathered, and Sayyiduna Dihyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Give me a slave woman from among the captives.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Go and take any slave woman.” He took Safiyyah bint Huyayy. Then a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! You have given Safiyyah, the chief lady of the tribes of Qurayzah and Nadir, to Dihyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and she is suitable only for you.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Bring Safiyyah here.” When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at Safiyyah, he said (to Dihyah): “Take another slave woman from among the captives instead of her.” (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set Safiyyah free and married her. When they set out on the way, Umm Sulaym adorned Umm al-Mu’minin Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and sent her to him at night. In the morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as a bridegroom, said: “Whoever has anything, let him bring it.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) spread out a leather mat. Some brought dates, and some brought clarified butter. (The narrator says:) I think Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) also mentioned sattu (roasted barley flour). (Then) he says: Then they mixed all of it and made malidah (a dish of dates, butter, and flour), and that was the wedding feast of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
