Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Allah made the prayer obligatory, it was prescribed as two rak'ahs, both in residence and on a journey. Then the prayer during travel was kept as it was, and an addition was made to the prayer in residence.
