Hadith 228

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to relate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(One night) the roof of my house was opened while I was in Makkah, then Jibreel (peace be upon him) descended and split open my chest, then washed it with the water of Zamzam, then brought a golden basin filled with wisdom and faith and poured it into my chest, then closed it up. After that, he took my hand and ascended with me to the heavens. When I reached the lowest heaven, Jibreel (peace be upon him) said to the gatekeeper of the heaven, ‘Open (the gate).’ He asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘This is Jibreel.’ He asked, ‘Is there anyone with you?’ Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, ‘Yes! Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is with me.’ He asked, ‘Has he been called?’ Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, ‘Yes.’ So when the gate was opened, we ascended to the lowest heaven. Suddenly, I saw a man sitting, with some people on his right and some on his left. When he looked to his right, he laughed, and when he looked to his left, he wept. Then he (upon seeing me) said, ‘Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous son!’ I asked Jibreel (peace be upon him), ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Adam (peace be upon him), and those on his right and left are the souls of his offspring. The people on his right are the people of Paradise, and those on his left are the people of Hell. That is why when he looks to his right, he laughs, and when he looks to his left, he weeps.’ Then I was taken up to the second heaven, and its gatekeeper was told to open the gate, and he spoke in the same manner as the previous one. Then the gate was opened.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that then Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Adam, Idris, Musa, Isa, and Ibrahim (peace be upon them) in the heavens (and did not mention their places except that he said) he found Adam (peace be upon him) in the lowest heaven and Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in the sixth heaven. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Jibreel (peace be upon him) took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) past Idris (peace be upon him), he said, ‘Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous brother.’ (The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:) I asked Jibreel (peace be upon him), ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Idris (peace be upon him).’ Then I passed by Musa (peace be upon him), and he said to me, ‘Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous brother.’ I asked (Jibreel), ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Musa (peace be upon him).’ Then I passed by Isa (peace be upon him), and he said, ‘Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous brother.’ I asked, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Isa (peace be upon him).’ Then I passed by Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and he said, ‘Welcome, O righteous Prophet and righteous son.’ I asked, ‘Who is this?’ Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, ‘This is Ibrahim (peace be upon him).’

(The narrator said) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas and Abu Habba Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them) say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then I was taken up further until I reached a very high place where I could hear the sound of the pens (writing of the angels). Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then Allah made fifty prayers obligatory upon my Ummah. So I returned with them until I passed by Musa (peace be upon him), and he asked, ‘What has Allah made obligatory upon your Ummah?’ I said, ‘Fifty prayers have been made obligatory.’ He said, ‘Return to your Lord, for your Ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I returned, and Allah reduced a portion of it. Then I returned to Musa (peace be upon him) and said, ‘Allah has reduced a portion of it.’ Musa (peace be upon him) said, ‘Return to your Lord, for your Ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I returned, and Allah reduced a portion of it (again). Then I returned to him (and informed him), and he said, ‘Return to your Lord, for your Ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I returned again to Allah, and Allah said: ‘(Fine) These are five (prayers), and they are (in reward) as fifty, and My word does not change with Me.’ Then I returned to Musa (peace be upon him), and he said, ‘Return to your Lord.’ I said, ‘Now I feel shy before my Lord (to keep returning).’ (Then Jibreel took me and brought me to Sidrat al-Muntaha, and it was covered with many colors, I do not know what they were.) Then I was taken into Paradise, and (I saw that) its domes were pearls and its soil was musk.”
