Hadith 2154

Someone asked Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) about the inheritance of a daughter, a granddaughter, and a sister. He replied: "Half is for the daughter and half is for the sister. And you should go and ask Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both); I am sure he will give the same answer as I did." So they asked him, and Abu Musa's answer was mentioned to him. He said: "If I give this answer, I would go astray and never be guided. I will give the same ruling as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave in this matter: half for the daughter, one-sixth for the granddaughter—this makes two-thirds—and the remaining one-third is for the sister." (The questioner says:) "Then we returned to Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of Ibn Mas'ud's (may Allah be pleased with them both) verdict. He said: 'As long as this scholar (i.e., Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them both) is among you, never ask me again.'"
