`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says:` By Allah, besides Whom there is no deity, sometimes due to hunger I would lie down on the ground with my stomach pressed against it, and sometimes I would tie a stone to my stomach. One day, I sat in the path of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions. First, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, so I asked him about a verse of the Qur'an (only) so that he would ask me (about my condition) and take me home and feed me, but he went away. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, so I said the same to him, but he also went away. Then Abu al-Qasim (Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by. When he saw me, he understood and smiled and said: "O Abu Hur!" I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Come with me." I went along with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the house, I asked permission to enter, and I was granted permission. I went inside. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw a bowl of milk and said: "Where did this come from?" The household said, "So-and-so person," or he said, "So-and-so woman has given it to you as a gift." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Abu Hur!" I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Call the people of Suffah." Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the people of Suffah were guests of the Muslims; they had no home, nor any wealth or possessions, nor any friend or acquaintance whose house they could stay at (they used to stay in the mosque). When any charity would come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not partake of it himself (because charity was forbidden for him and his family), but would give it to them. And if a gift came, he would keep some for himself and give some to them. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Go and call the people of Suffah," it was very hard on me. I said to myself, "How will this little milk suffice for the people of Suffah? I was more deserving of this milk; if I drank some, I would gain some strength. And when the people of Suffah come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) will order me to serve them the milk. When they start drinking, I do not expect that any milk will be left for me at the end. But what could I do? Obeying Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was absolutely necessary." So, reluctantly, I went to them and called them. They asked permission to enter, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) granted them permission. They came and sat in their places. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "O Abu Hur!" I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah!" He said: "Serve them this milk." I began to give the bowl of milk to each one of them. When one finished drinking, he would return the bowl to me. I would give it to the next person, and he too would drink to his fill and return the bowl to me. (Then to the third person, and so on.) In this way, after all of them, the bowl reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). By that time, the people of Suffah had drunk to their fill. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took the bowl in his hand, looked at me, smiled, and said: "Now only you and I are left." I said, "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Sit down and drink the milk." I sat down and began to drink the milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Drink more." So I drank more. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept saying this until I said, "By the One Who sent you with the truth, now there is no more room in my stomach." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Alright, now give it to me." I gave it to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) praised Allah, said Bismillah, and drank the remaining milk. (This was also one of the miracles of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.)
