Being overly occupied with poetry to the neglect of Allah's remembrance is forbidden.
Hadith 2048

Narrated Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If the belly of any one of you were to be filled with pus, it would be better for him than to be filled with poetry." (That is, if he remembers only poetry and nothing else, and especially those verses which are against the Shariah.)
