Hadith 1957

Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said, “Oh, my head is splitting!” Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “(Do not grieve, rather) it would be better if your end comes in this pain while I am still alive, so that I may pray for you and seek forgiveness for you.” Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “Alas! By Allah, I think you only wish for my death. In fact, if I die, you will spend the night with one of your wives that very evening.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “It is not so at all. Rather, I am (myself afflicted) with a headache, and I wish or intend (the narrator is unsure) to send for Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and his son, and call them, and make a bequest (regarding the caliphate), so that no one can say anything after me, nor can anyone desire (the caliphate). (But) then I thought that Allah Himself will not approve (of anyone else’s caliphate), nor will the Muslims approve.”
