Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that I know the reason for the revelation of the verse of veiling (hijab) more than anyone else. Even Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a companion of high rank, used to ask me about it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had newly married Umm al-Mu'mineen Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had married her in Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) invited people to eat when the day had advanced. When everyone had left after eating, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and a few men remained sitting with him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and left, and I went with him. When he reached the door of the room of Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), he thought that those people would have left, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, and I also returned with him. (When we saw,) all of them were still sitting in their places. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went back again, and I went with him. When he reached the door of the room of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), he thought that they would have left, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, and I also returned with him. (This time) we saw that those people had (indeed) left. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed a curtain between me and himself, and (at that very moment) the command of veiling was revealed.
