Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Abu Hudhaifah bin Utbah bin Rabi’ah bin Abd Shams, who was present at the Battle of Badr, adopted Salim as his son and married him to his niece Hind, daughter of Walid bin Utbah Rabi’ah. Salim was a slave of an Ansari woman, just as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had adopted Zaid as his son. It was the custom in the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) that if someone adopted a person as a son, people would call him by the name of his adoptive father, and after his death, he would also inherit from him. When Allah revealed this verse: “Call them by (the names of) their (real) fathers...” (Al-Ahzab: 5), then all of them began to be called by the names of their real fathers. And if his father was not known, then he would be called a Mawla (client) or a religious brother. Afterwards, Sahla bint Suhail bin Amr al-Qurashi al-Amiri, who was the wife of Abu Hudhaifah, came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah! We used to consider Salim as our son, but now Allah has sent down the command which you know (what should I do?)” Then the entire hadith was narrated.
