`Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that` my father (Sayyiduna Amr bin As) (may Allah be pleased with him) married me to a woman from a good family, and he would often ask his daughter-in-law about her husband (me), and she would reply, "Yes, yes, he is a good and pious man, but since I have come, he has never set foot on my bedding nor come near me." When a period of time had passed, (my father) mentioned this to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him to me." I (upon being called) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "How do you fast?" I said, "Daily." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "How do you complete the Qur'an?" I said, "Every night." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Fast three days in every month and complete the Qur'an once in a month." I said, "I have the strength for more than that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then fast three days in a week." I said, "I have the strength for more than that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then fast two days and break the fast one day." I said, "I have the strength for more than that." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Alright! Adopt the best fast, the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him), that is, fast one day and break the fast one day, and complete the Qur'an in seven nights." (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) says) I wish I had accepted the concession of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), because now I have become old and weak (I no longer have that strength). Then he would have one-seventh (one manzil) of the Qur'an recited to someone from his family during the day. The portion that was to be recited at night, he would repeat during the day so that it would be easier to recite at night, and when he became weak and wanted to regain strength, he would not fast continuously for several days, then, counting those days, he would make up the fasts. He disliked that any matter should remain which he used to do in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
