Hadith 1815

Sayyiduna Usaid bin Hudair (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah one night and his horse was tied near him. Suddenly, the horse began to startle. When he became silent, the horse calmed down. He started reciting again, and the horse startled again. He became silent again, and the horse calmed down. He started reciting again, and the horse startled again. Then he stopped (ceased recitation), and his son Yahya was lying near the horse. He feared that the horse might trample him. When he moved him from there and looked towards the sky, the sky was not visible. In the morning, he came and related this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Ibn Hudair! You should have continued reciting, O Ibn Hudair! You should have continued reciting." He said, "O Messenger of Allah! Yahya was lying near the horse, and I feared that the horse might trample Yahya, so I raised my head and returned to him. Then I raised my head towards the sky and saw a strange canopy-like cloud in which many lamps were lit. Then I went outside until it disappeared from my sight." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do you know what that was?" He said, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Those were angels who had come near you upon hearing your voice. If you had continued reciting till morning, other people would also have seen them (openly), and they would not have disappeared from their sight."
