Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard Sayyiduna Hisham bin Hakeem (may Allah be pleased with him) reciting Surah Al-Furqan during the blessed life of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I listened attentively and noticed that he was reciting it in several ways different from those in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had taught me this Surah. (I became angry) and was about to attack him during the prayer itself, but I controlled myself. When he finished the prayer with salam, I put my cloak around his neck and asked, "Who taught you this Surah in the way I heard you recite it?" He replied, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me." I said, "You are lying! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself taught me this Surah in a different way." Then I dragged him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I heard him reciting Surah Al-Furqan in a way you did not teach me." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Let him go (and said), O Hisham! Recite." He recited it in the same way I had heard him recite. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "This Surah was revealed in this way." Then he said, "O Umar! Now you recite." I recited it in the way the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had taught me, and he said, "It was revealed in this way as well. Indeed, this Qur'an has been revealed in seven ways (dialects), so recite in whichever way is easy for you."
