Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was in a battle when I heard Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul with my own ears saying, "Do not give anything in charity or expenditure to the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until they leave him, and if we return to Madinah from this battle, the honorable will surely expel the lowly (meaning, we will expel them)." I informed this to my uncle or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so they mentioned it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me, and I told him what had happened. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and his companions (and asked them), and they swore an oath that they had not said such a thing. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared me a liar and confirmed them. I was so grieved as I had never been before, and I stayed at home. My uncle asked, "What is the reason that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called you a liar and was angry with you?" At that time, this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When the hypocrites come to you..." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me, recited the entire verse to me, and said: "O Zaid! Surely Allah has declared you truthful."
