Hadith 1768

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that one day the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed (the hill of) Safa and began to proclaim: "(Ya sabahah!) O people, come quickly!" Hearing this, the Quraysh all gathered and asked, "What is the matter?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If I were to inform you that an enemy is about to attack you in the morning or evening, would you believe me?" All replied, "Yes, certainly." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "(Well then, you should also believe this statement of mine that) I am warning you of a severe punishment before it comes (so refrain from disbelief)." Abu Lahab said, "(God forbid!) May your hands perish! Did you gather us only for this?" At that moment, Allah Almighty revealed this Surah: "Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and he (himself) is ruined," and the entire Surah was sent down.
