Hadith 1759

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): He was informed that “a person has stated at the place of Kindah that on the Day of Resurrection, smoke will appear, which will render the ears and eyes of the hypocrites completely useless, and the believers will experience a condition like a cold (i.e., it will affect them mildly).” (When this news reached him and he was reclining at that time,) he became angry and sat up straight, then said: A person should only say what he knows, and if he does not know something, he should say that Allah knows best, because it is also a part of knowledge that if one does not know something, he should say, “I do not know.” For Allah Almighty says to His Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Say: I do not ask you for any reward for this (preaching and admonition), nor am I one of those who invent (things of their own accord).” (Surah Sad: 86). (The real story of the smoke is as follows:) The Quraysh delayed in accepting faith, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: “O Allah! Help me against the people of Quraysh by sending upon them a famine like the seven-year famine of Yusuf (peace be upon him).” So a famine struck, (so severe) that they were destroyed in it and ate carrion and bones, and (due to hunger) a person would see something like smoke between the sky and the earth. Eventually, Abu Sufyan came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad! You instruct us to maintain family ties, and now many people of your own tribe have perished (due to the famine). Pray to Allah (to remove it). (So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed,) then recited this verse: “So wait for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke…” to “…then you will return to your former state.” (Ad-Dukhan: 10-15). (Sayyiduna Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) So will the punishment of the Hereafter be lifted from them for a while, and then they will persist in their disbelief? (So what is meant is this smoke, not that there will be smoke on the Day of Resurrection.) Then Allah Almighty said: “On the Day We will seize with the greatest seizure…” (Ad-Dukhan: 16), this refers to the Battle of Badr, and “the afflicting punishment” refers to (being imprisoned at Badr or) the Battle of Badr, and regarding “The Romans have been defeated… soon they will be victorious.” (Ar-Rum: 1-3), the incident of Rome occurred (during the blessed life of the Prophet).
