Hadith 1757

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Hilal bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) accused his wife of committing adultery with Sharik bin Sahma in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Bring evidence, otherwise the punishment of qazf (i.e., 80 lashes) will be imposed on your back." He said, "O Messenger of Allah! If any one of us sees someone doing something bad with his wife, whom should he bring as a witness (and whom should he call to testify)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept saying: "Bring evidence, otherwise the punishment will be imposed on you." So Hilal said, "By Him Who sent you with the truth, I am truthful, and Allah will surely reveal a command concerning me that will save my back from punishment." At that very moment, Jibreel (peace be upon him) descended and this verse was revealed: "And those who accuse their wives of adultery..." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited it, and when he reached the verse, "if her husband is truthful" (An-Nur: 6-9), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned and called for Hilal's wife, and Hilal also came, and they both gave the testimonies of li'an. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: "Indeed, Allah knows that one of you is surely lying, so is there anyone among you who will repent?" Then the woman stood up and gave (four) testimonies (i.e., she said four times: I call Allah to witness that I am truthful), and when she was about to say it the fifth time (that if I am lying, may the curse of Allah be upon me), the people stopped her and said, "This testimony (if it is a lie) will bring punishment upon you." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that she hesitated and lowered her neck, from which we thought that she would confess (but) then she said, "I cannot disgrace my people forever," and she said the fifth statement as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Look! If a child is born with black eyes, large buttocks, and thick shins, then it is from the seed of Sharik bin Sahma." So such a child was born, and at that time the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If Allah's command had not come, you would have seen what I would have done to this woman."
