Hadith 1718

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that (in my opinion) in three matters my view coincided with Allah’s command, or he said: Allah agreed with me in three matters. (First is that) I submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): If you perform prayer at the Maqam Ibrahim (after Tawaf), it would be better. (In accordance with this, Allah revealed the verse: “Take the Maqam Ibrahim as a place of prayer.”) And (second is that) I submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Good and bad people come to you, if you order the Mothers of the Believers (your pure wives) to observe veiling, it would be good. So, in accordance with this, Allah revealed the verse of Hijab (“O Prophet! Say to your wives...” etc.). (The third is that) when I found out that you (peace and blessings be upon him) were angry with some of your wives, I went to them and said: Refrain (from what you are doing), otherwise Allah will give His Messenger better wives in exchange for you. When I came to one of your wives (Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her), she said: “O Umar! Can the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not advise his wives, that you have come to advise?” At that time (in accordance with what I said), Allah revealed this verse: “If he (the Prophet) divorces you, his Lord will soon give him, in exchange for you, wives better than you, who are Muslims...” (Surah At-Tahrim: 5)
