Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says: We gave medicine to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) during his illness. He (peace be upon him) forbade us, but we thought that a patient usually refuses medicine because it tastes bad. When he (peace be upon him) regained consciousness, he said: “Did I not forbid you from giving me medicine (then why did you give it)?” We said that a patient usually refuses medicine. He (peace be upon him) said: “I saw that all of you were forcing me to take medicine, except Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who was not present. (So he asked, now your punishment is that) no one in the house should remain, everyone’s mouth should be given the medicine, except Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) because he was not present.”
