Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said in a state of health: “No prophet passes away until he is shown his place in Paradise, then he is given the choice whether to remain (in the world) or to choose the Hereafter.” When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fell ill and his time (of death) approached, and his blessed head was on my thigh, at first he lost consciousness, then when he regained consciousness, he looked towards the roof of the house and said: “O Allah! (Let me be) with the highest companions.” (That is, he chose the Hereafter.) At that moment, I (in my heart) realized that now the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) does not wish to remain with us, and I was convinced of the truth of the hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say that a prophet is given the choice (then he passes away).
