Hadith 1697

`Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said:` My friends, who had come with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in this expedition, sent me to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to ask for mounts. I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! My companions have sent me to you to ask for mounts." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) refused and said, "By Allah! I will not mount them on anything." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was already angry, but I did not realize it. I returned very saddened. I was grieved for two reasons: one, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not give us mounts, and the other, that perhaps my asking for mounts had angered the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I went back to my companions and told them what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said. Shortly after, I heard that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was calling out, "O Abdullah bin Qais!" (which is the name of Sayyiduna Abu Musa). I went to him and he said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is calling you." I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said, "Take these two camels, and these two camels, and these two camels (that is, six camels in total)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had just bought these camels from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he said, "Take these camels to your companions and tell them that indeed Allah, the Exalted, has said that the Messenger of Allah has given you these camels to ride, so ride them." I took those camels to my companions and said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given you these camels to ride." But by Allah! I will not leave you until some of you go with me to the person who heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) refuse to give mounts, lest you think that I have told you something which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say." They said to me, "We believe you, and if you think it is good to confirm, we will do so." Then Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) took some of them with him and went to those who had heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that he had first refused to give mounts and then later granted them. They narrated exactly what Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) had told his companions.
