Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), while delivering the sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage, said: “Time has turned back to its original state which it had on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred. Three of them are consecutive: (1) Dhu al-Qa'dah, (2) Dhu al-Hijjah, (3) Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab of (the tribe of) Mudar, which comes between Jumada al-Thani and Sha'ban.” Then he said: “What month is this?” We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He remained silent for a while, so much so that we thought he would give it another name. Then he said: “Is it not the month of Dhu al-Hijjah?” We replied, “Indeed, it is the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.” Then he said: “What city is this?” We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He again remained silent for a while, and we thought he would give it another name. Then he said: “Is it not the sacred city, i.e., Makkah?” We replied, “Indeed, it is the city of Makkah.” Then he said: “What day is this?” We replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He again remained silent for a while, so much so that we thought he would give it another name. Then he said: “Is it not the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr)?” We replied, “Indeed, it is the Day of Sacrifice.” Then he said: “So listen! Your blood, your wealth, and”—the narrator says, “I think (Abu Bakrah, may Allah be pleased with him) also said—‘your honor are sacred to one another, just as the sanctity of this day, in this city, in this month. And soon you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Be alert! Do not turn back after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another.’ Let the one who is present convey (this message) to the one who is absent. Sometimes the one to whom the message is conveyed remembers it better than the one who heard it.” (Then he said): “Beware! Have I not conveyed the commands of Allah to you?” He repeated this twice. (Imam Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him, when narrating this hadith, used to say that the noble Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke the truth.)
