Hadith 1686

`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates:` Musaylimah the Liar came during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said that if Muhammad (peace be upon him) appoints him as his successor after him, he will obey him. And he had brought most of his people (Banu Hanifah) along with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went to him accompanied by the orator of the Ansar, Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), and at that time the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him) held a branch of a date-palm. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood by Musaylimah the Liar and his companions and said: "Even if you ask me for this twig, I will not give it to you, and whatever Allah has decreed for you, you cannot escape it. And if you turn away from me, Allah will destroy you. And I see you are the one whose condition was described to me in a dream, and this is Thabit bin Qais who will answer you on my behalf." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I inquired about the meaning of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) statement: "You are the one whose condition was described to me in a dream." So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: "Once, while I was asleep, I saw in a dream two bangles in my hands. I became worried about them. Then, in the dream, I was divinely inspired to blow on them, so I blew on them and they flew away. I interpreted this as meaning that two liars would claim prophethood after me, one being Aswad Ansi and the other Musaylimah."
