Narrated Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent an army towards the seashore and appointed Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander, and they were three hundred men. We set out, and when we had gone a little distance, our provisions ran out. Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that everyone's provisions be collected in one place, so they were gathered. My provision was only one date, and he would give us a little from it each day. Then that too finished, so we would get only one date each day. (The narrator says) I asked, "Would one date fill your stomach?" Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "When even that finished, then we realized its value." Then we reached the sea and saw a fish like a mountain. The people ate from it for eighteen nights. Then Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that two of its ribs be set upright, and they were so high that a camel with its saddle was made to pass underneath them, and it passed through easily.
