Hadith 1675

Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent an army and appointed an Ansari as its leader, and ordered everyone to obey him. (On the way) he became angry and said, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not order you to obey me?" They replied, "Yes, he certainly did." The Ansari said, "Gather wood for me." They gathered it. Then he said, "Light a fire." They lit the fire. Then he said, "All of you jump into it." They intended to enter it, but some began to stop others and said, "We have come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fleeing from the fire (of Hell), so how can we burn in it now?" Thus, while they were arguing, the fire went out and the Ansari's anger subsided. When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "If they had entered that fire, they would never have come out of it until the Day of Resurrection. Obedience is only required in good deeds (it is not necessary to obey the leader in sinful matters)."
