Hadith 1650

`Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that` the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed for three nights between Madinah and Khaybar, and during these nights he spent the wedding night with Umm al-Mu’minin Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then I invited people to the wedding feast (walimah) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). There was neither bread nor meat in it; there was only this, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to spread a dining cloth. The dining cloth was spread, and then dates, cheese, and clarified butter were placed on it. Then the Muslims began to discuss among themselves whether Safiyyah was among the Mothers of the Believers or a slave woman. Then they themselves said: If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) makes her observe hijab, she will be among the Mothers of the Believers, and if he does not make her observe hijab, she will remain a slave woman. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, he made a place for Umm al-Mu’minin Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) to sit behind him and drew a curtain (for her).
