Hadith 1647

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the polytheists confronted each other (on the day of Khaybar) and both sides fought. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned to his army and the disbelievers to theirs, there was a man among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who would not leave any single polytheist but would go after him and strike him with his sword. The people said, “Today he has done such deeds that none of us could do (he killed many disbelievers).” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “He is from the people of Hell.” One of the Muslims said, “I will stay with him.” So he stayed with him; wherever he stopped, he would stop, and when he ran, he would run with him. (The narrator said:) Eventually, that man was severely wounded and hastened his death; he placed the handle of his sword on the ground and the tip between his chest, then leaned with all his weight on it and killed himself. So the other man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “I bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: “How is that?” He replied, “O Messenger of Allah! Just now you declared that man to be from the people of Hell, and your statement was hard on the people, so I thought I should go and see his condition and inform the people about it. So I followed him, and then he was severely wounded, and to hasten his death, he placed the handle of his sword on the ground and the tip against his chest, then leaned with all his weight on it and killed himself.” Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A person may do the deeds of the people of Paradise in the eyes of the people, yet he is from the people of Hell; and a person may do the deeds of the people of Hell in the eyes of the people, yet he is from the people of Paradise.”
