Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out at night with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the expedition of Khaybar. Someone said to Sayyiduna ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), “O ‘Amir! Why don’t you recite some poetry for us?” Sayyiduna ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) was a poet. He dismounted from his ride and began to recite poetry to the people, saying:
“O Allah! If it were not for You, we would not have been guided, Nor given charity, nor prayed. Forgive us for our shortcomings in obeying You, We sacrifice ourselves for You, And if we fight, keep our feet firm, And send down tranquility upon us. When someone calls us to injustice, we will refuse, The disbelievers have raised a clamor and called for help against us.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Who is this reciting poetry to urge the camels on?” The people said, “‘Amir bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him).” So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “May Allah have mercy on him.” A man (Sayyiduna ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Prophet of Allah, (Paradise or martyrdom) has become obligatory for ‘Amir. Why did you not let us benefit from him as well?” Then we reached Khaybar and besieged the people of Khaybar. Meanwhile, we suffered severe hunger. Then Allah granted victory to the Muslims over Khaybar.
On the day of victory, the Muslims lit fires in the evening (everyone began to cook food). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: “What is this fire, and what are you cooking under it?” The people replied, “Under meat.” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: “Meat of which animal?” They replied, “Domestic donkeys.” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Throw it away and break the pots.” Someone said, “Should we throw it away and wash the pots?” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Do so.”
Then, when the ranks were formed to face the enemy, Sayyiduna ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) had a short sword. He struck at the leg of a Jew, but the tip of the sword turned back and struck Sayyiduna ‘Amir’s own knee, and Sayyiduna ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred from that wound.
(The narrator) says: When everyone returned, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw me sad, so he took my hand and asked: “How are you?” I replied, “May my parents be sacrificed for you! People say that ‘Amir’s deeds have been lost (because he killed himself).” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever said that is lying. ‘Amir will have a double reward.” And he joined his two fingers together and said: “‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) was striving and fighting. No Arab has walked the earth like ‘Amir. There are very few Arabs living in Madinah like him.” And in another narration it is stated: “No Arab like ‘Amir has been born in Madinah.”
