Narrated by Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him): In the year of Hudaybiyyah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with more than a thousand companions. When he reached Dhul-Hulaifah, he put garlands on the sacrificial animals and marked their humps by cutting them, and there he assumed the Ihram for Umrah. He also sent a spy from the tribe of Khuza’ah (to bring news about the Quraysh), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued advancing. When he reached the place of Ghadeer al-Ash-shat, the spy came to him and informed him that the Quraysh had gathered armies to fight him, and these armies were taken from various tribes. They would all fight against him and prevent him from reaching the House of Allah and would not let him go there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “O people! Advise me (what should be done). Do you think I should attack the families of the disbelievers who intend to prevent us from the House of Allah? If they confront us, Allah is Most Great and Mighty, Who has saved the spy from the evil of the polytheists. And if they cannot confront us, we will leave them like those who have been routed and fled.” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! We have only come with the intention of the House of Allah; we do not want to kill or loot anyone. You proceed, and if anyone stops us, then we will fight. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Proceed in the name of Allah.”
