Hadith 164

Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a garden from among the gardens of Madinah or Makkah and heard the voices of two men who were being punished in their graves. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are being punished, and (apparently) they are not being punished for a major matter." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes (the fact is that) one of them did not protect himself from urine (splashes), and the other used to go about with tale-bearing." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a branch, broke it into two pieces, and placed one piece on each of their graves. He was asked: O Messenger of Allah! Why did you do this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "It is hoped that their punishment will be lessened as long as these do not dry."
