It is narrated from Amir al-Mu’minin Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was traveling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at night during a journey. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to him. Then (again) he asked, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. He asked again, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) still did not reply. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to himself, “O Umar! May your mother weep for you! You asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) three times, but he did not reply to you.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says, “I spurred my camel and went ahead of the Muslims. I was afraid that some command regarding me might be revealed in the Qur’an. I had not stayed long when I heard a caller calling me. I became even more afraid that something might have been revealed in the Qur’an about me. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Tonight a surah has been revealed to me which is more beloved to me than all that upon which the sun rises.’ Then he recited this verse: ‘Indeed (O Prophet!), We have given you a clear victory.’ (Surah al-Fath: 1)”
