Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says: O people! You take the conquest mentioned in Surah Al-Fath to mean the conquest of Makkah, but we consider the pledge of Ridwan, which took place on the day of Hudaybiyyah, as the real victory. (The story is as follows:) We were fourteen hundred men with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Hudaybiyyah is a well. We began to draw water from it until not a single drop was left. When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he came there, sat at the edge of the well, asked for a vessel of water, performed ablution, rinsed his mouth, prayed, and then poured that water into the well. We waited for a little while, and then so much water gushed forth from the well that we and our animals all drank to our fill.
