Mukhtasar Bukhari

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): When Hafsa bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with her) became a widow—her husband Khunais bin Hudhafa Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and had participated in the Battle of Badr, died in Madinah—then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I met Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) to him and said, “(She is a widow), if you wish, I can marry her to you?” He said, “I will think about it and inform you.” So I waited for several nights. Then (when I met him) he said, “At the moment, I think it is better that I do not marry.” Then I met Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, “If you wish, I can marry Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) to you?” But Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent and did not reply to me, so I became more upset with him than I was with Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). I waited for several more nights, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a proposal to Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), so I married her to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). After that, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and said, “Perhaps you were upset with me when you mentioned Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) to me and I did not reply to you?” I said, “Yes, I was.” He said, “The reason I did not reply to you was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had mentioned Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) to me (i.e., whether he should marry her), and I could not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had decided not to marry her, then surely I would have married her.”
