Narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from the people of Egypt came to him and said to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): Do you know that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) fled on the day of Uhud? He said: Yes. He said: Do you know that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was absent from the Battle of Badr and did not participate? He said: Yes. He said: Do you know that Uthman was also absent at the time of the Pledge of Ridwan and was not present in it (he did not pledge)? Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Yes. That man said: Allahu Akbar. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Come, I will explain to you (the reality of all these matters). As for his fleeing in the Battle of Uhud, I testify that Allah has pardoned and forgiven him for his fault. And as for not participating in the Battle of Badr, the reason was that the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in his marriage and she was ill, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told him (to stay in Madinah with her), you will get the reward of participating and also a share in the spoils of war. And as for being absent from the Pledge of Ridwan (it is a virtue), if there had been anyone among the people of Makkah more honorable in the sight of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) than Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he would have sent him (as his representative). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Pledge of Ridwan took place after Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone to Makkah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pointed with his right hand and said: "This is the hand of Uthman." And he struck it on his left hand and said: "This is the pledge of Uthman." Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to that man: Take these (three answers) with you (to Egypt).
