Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he performed ablution in his house, then went out. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to myself that today I will not leave the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) all day; I will stay with him. He says: Then I came to the mosque and inquired about the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). People said that he has gone out in that direction. I also followed in the footsteps of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and kept asking people about him. While walking, I found out that he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had gone to the garden of Aris. I sat near the door, which was made of palm branches, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished relieving himself and had performed ablution. Then I walked towards him. I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting on the edge of the well of Aris, in the middle of it, with both his shins uncovered and dangling in the well. I greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then I returned and sat near the door. I said (in my heart) that today I will be the doorkeeper of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and pushed the door. I asked, "Who is it?" He said, "Abu Bakr." I said, "Wait a moment." Then I went and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) seeks permission to enter." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Let him in and give him the glad tidings of Paradise." I came and said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given you the glad tidings of Paradise." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered and sat on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the same edge, with both his feet dangling and his shins uncovered, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting. I returned and sat down again, and I had left my brother (Amir) performing ablution at home. I said, "If Allah wills good for so-and-so (i.e., my brother), He will bring him here." Meanwhile (what do I see), someone started shaking the door. I asked, "Who is it?" The reply came, "Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)." I said, "Wait." Then I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), greeted him, and said, "Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) seeks permission to enter." He said, "Let him in and give him the glad tidings of Paradise." So I went and said, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given you the glad tidings of Paradise." So he also entered and sat on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the same edge, and both his feet were dangling in the well. Then I returned and sat (at the door). I said, "If Allah wills good for so-and-so (Amir), He will bring him here as well." Meanwhile, another man shook the door. I asked, "Who is it?" He replied, "Uthman ibn Affan." I said, "Wait." Then I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Let him in and give him the glad tidings of Paradise, but he will be afflicted with a calamity." I came and said to him, "Enter, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has given you the glad tidings of Paradise, but after a calamity that will befall you." So he also entered and saw that a part of the edge was filled, so he sat on the other side, facing the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
