´Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)` narrates the incident of that night (the Night of Ascension), when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken from Masjid al-Ka'bah, that before revelation descended upon him, three angels came to him while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sleeping in Masjid al-Haram (between Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib and Sayyiduna Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with them). One of them (the angels) said, "Who among them is he (who has been commanded to be taken)?" The second said, "He (the one in the middle) is the best among them." The third said, "Take the one who is the best among all of them." That night, only this happened, and after that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them on another night, just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to see with his heart, and the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sleep but his heart would not sleep, and this is the state of all the Prophets: their eyes sleep but their hearts do not sleep. Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with him and ascended to the heavens.
